Garth Lovvorn has another home under
construction! Number 36 began in December in the
Adel Street cul-de-sac where there are only 2 building sites
remaining.
Assisting this week in constructing this home, he
has the assistance of 6 students from Western
Kentucky in Bowling Green.
I spoke with Renee Meek, about why she wanted to
come and work for Habitat, She told me, she met here advisor,
Brian, thru church where they were making plans for
the winter Habitat trips. "It's really exciting to
learn this, to be helping others... giving back to
the community and I've never done anything like this
before," she said.
Renee and her group arrived on
Sunday January 16th and will remain thru Saturday.
There were 2 other She said she feels very lucky
to have gotten to come to the Athens trip. She was
told this was the best trip any of them have ever
been on. They said due to the
hospitality, friendly residents and businesses are
why everyone likes to come to Athens.
They have received free lodging from a local realty
company, in
a farm house in Toney. "We have people who come in
and cook breakfast for us," said Renee. Garth has lunch brought
out to them and he provides activities for them
like a trip to Athens State University, a game night
and the movies.
The student leader on this trip is Jessica, she
and Brian are experienced in working with Habitat.
The others are on their first habitat trip. Renee
said her tasks have
been cutting plywood, and nailing it up. They have
painted siding and made storage boxes for
placement in the home. Today they were working on the
roof and Thursday hopefully will work on the putting
up the siding.
Renee is a freshman graphic design student at
Western Kentucky University. She hadn't used any
construction tools, or worked in any way in building
so she did received tool training a couple of times
at her school before leaving for Athens.

In a recent interview with Garth LovVorn Jr. he
informed us that "these houses are not given for
free to these selected occupants, they do have to
pay for them, they will have a reduced price and the
interest rate is very reasonable, but the
qualification are strict and we require copies of
their financial records and other work related statements".
